Man in the Mirror

We all know the famous lyrics from Michael Jackson’s song: “I'm starting with the man in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his ways. And no message could've been any clearer. If you wanna make the world a better place. Take a look at yourself and then make a change.”
In today’s culture, a man’s character is often measured by his ability to chase after the bread, the paper, the cheddar or endure hardships. Although these characteristics may have some worth, they barely touch the surface. A person's character, whether male or female, is not only determined by outward appearances or wealth. It's important to keep in mind that looks can be misleading; values, actions, and moral beliefs are what truly define character.
The question now is, what defines a good man or what is a good man made of? Certainly not snips and snails and puppy dog tails. Integrity, honesty, compassion, respect, confidence, emotional availability, patience, and ambition are qualities that we commonly consider. These qualities are worthy of emulation by everyone.
Nevertheless, I believe that beneath these characteristics there is a more profound, spiritual desire. A decent man addresses physical necessities and adheres to societal standards, whereas a devout man aims to satisfy spiritual needs and follows the teachings of Jesus Christ. His goal is to lead a righteous and virtuous life according to the guidance of God (Philippians 4:8-9).
Loves and Fears God: A foundational characteristic is that a godly man does what many other men would say is weak and wimpy. He aims to love God wholeheartedly (Matthew 22:37) and to live with the fear of God before his eyes (Proverbs 1:8) and not the fear of man.
Keeps God’s Commandments: He seeks fulfilment in keeping God’s commandments and loves all of God’s ways (Psalm 119:128), unlike those who rebel and are against it.
Shows Strength: Not just about the macho bravado but a godly man shows strength in being a man of action. He doesn’t sit passively when action is needed but takes initiative (1 John 3:18).
Possesses Humility: He prioritizes the needs of others over his own (Philippians 2:4) and strives to serve like Christ (Matthew 20:28), walking humbly with God (Micah 6:8).
Practices Honorur, Integrity, and Purity of Heart: He commits to doing what is right even when no one is watching, embodying justice and purity in his actions (Philippians 4:8-9).
Bears the Fruit of the Spirit: A godly man differentiates himself from the world through traits like patience, love, mercy, and kindness (Galatians 5:16-26).
The next time you look in the mirror, instead of focusing on your appearance, take a moment to reflect on these questions: “What kind of man am I?” “Are my actions upright, especially in the eyes of God?” “How can I be better?” Embrace the opportunity for growth and change.
